Abstract

This work presents an Adaptive Enterprise Control Fabric — an architectural model and conceptual framework for making risk-conscious product decisions in secure, connected systems. The fabric prioritizes risk and security considerations within the broader decision space, achieving governance adaptability by accounting for context, uncertainty, complexity, and the distributed nature of decision-making across the enterprise.

Enterprise risk management and security posture interact continuously throughout product development and the system integration that follows across a connected product's lifecycle. These interactions are inherently contextual, relative, and uncertain, which means governing them requires a decision-risk model capable of adaptive weighting — one in which security state is treated as a contextual input that shapes both individual control decisions and the enterprise's overall security posture.

This paper formalizes definitions and structures for such a weighted decision model, demonstrates how it governs product decision-control interactions, and reports on experimentation with the proposed input fabric. We further show the concept's applicability through domain-specific support for smart-feature development and edge-control integration.
